2015 International Plowing Match and Rural Expo

2015 International Plowing Match and Rural ExpoFunding summary: Assisted in the marketing campaign for the 2015 International Plowing Match and Rural Expo in Finch, ON. The costs include ads in local newspapers and magazines as well as radio, television and social media. The Ontario Plowing Association developed its first Plowing Match in 1911 for farmers to participate in competitive plowing. International Plowing Match and Rural Expo is the largest show of its kind in North America.

Outcome: Increase attendance to the event and creation of a Local Legacy Fund. The project will also promote Cornwall at the Counties area and its local businesses.

Project cost: $ 229,000 / EODP $ 28,500


Cardinal Law

Cardinal LawFunding summary: Assisted in the creation of a new litigation department. The project costs include salary for new hire and material and supplies. Cardinal Law, located in downtown Cornwall, is a boutique law firm practicing in the area of Real Estate, Corporate, Tax and Estate Law, as well as General Litigation. They are a small local business who provides services to other small local businesses.

Outcome: Business expansion. The project will allow them to provide additional services to their clients. This project will also create 3 new jobs.

City of Cornwall

City of CornwallFunding summary: Assisted in the hiring of local media professionals to create a video series profiling manufacturing businesses in Cornwall. The series, called “Made in Cornwall”, will be available on their website. The City of Cornwall maintains an active Economic Development Department with the primary goal of facilitating growth and development. The department of economic development works to assist new and existing manufacturing and commercial business locate or expand in the City.

Outcome: Enhance local businesses and local economy. This project will assist local businesses and promote the Cornwall area.

Community Living Glengarry (White Swan Linen)

Glengarry Community Living - White Swan LinenFunding summary: Assisted in the upgrade of their folding station with the purchase of new equipment. The project costs also include training cost for employees. White Swan Linen, located in Alexandria, is a commercial services (social enterprise) operated by Community Living Glengarry Inc. which provides meaningful work experience for participants with intellectual disabilities. They provide services to airlines, spas, ambulances as well as retirement homes.

Outcome: Productivity enhancement and increase in quality control. The project will allow the organization to be more competitive. This project will also create 2 new jobs.

Derks Elevator Inc.

Derks Elevator Inc.Funding summary: Assisted in the expansion of their facility by contributing to the purchase of an oil extruder and oil press. Derks Elevator Inc. is a family owned and operated business where 6500 ton of corn and 5000 ton of soybeans are handled by the elevator each year. As a part of the elevator, they also roast beans and expel the oil from the soybeans. They operate out of Chesterville but provided services across Eastern Ontario; however most of our clients are within Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry.

Outcome: Increase productivity and efficiency. This project will create 2 new jobs.

Eastern Ontario Training Board

Eastern Ontario Training BoardFunding summary: Assisted in the hiring of a labour market coordinator to gather and analyze data. The cost related to the project include salary, website design fees, office supplies, travel cost as well as communication and promotion cost. The Eastern Ontario Training Board is one of the 25 local boards across Ontario, who promotes workforce development in the region. Their mission is to be the champion for local labour force development in the counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry and Prescott-Russell by identifying needs and facilitating solutions.

Outcome: Increase workforce development and fill a continuous demand for labour market data. This project will allow the organizations to increase their services and also create 1 new job.

Project cost: $ 156,264 / EODP $ 5,186


Glengarry Inter-Agency Group

Glengarry Inter-Agency GroupFunding summary: Assisted in the hiring of a consultant firm to create a feasibility study on a social enterprise. The social enterprise would be responsible for providing training and HR services to businesses who lack thereof. Glengarry Inter Agency Group, located at the south end of Alexandria, offers various social services for all age groups such as employment services in Glengarry County and beyond. Their mission is engaging their community in work, play and in the realization of their personal potential.

Outcome: Business expansion and provide additional services to local businesses. The project will allow the organization to bridge a gap between employers and the changing workforce.

Homestead Organics Ltd.

Project #1

Homestead Organics Ltd.Funding summary: Assisted in a two phase project to hire a consultant to explore sales agreements for Canadian organic soybeans for the food processing industry in Europe. Homestead Organics is a certified organic grain processor and distributor, feed mill, and supplier of organic farm inputs including seed, feed, grains, livestock supplements, soil amendments, pest controls. The company operates out of Berwick and handles 7500 ton a year and recently purchased an industrial property in Morrisburg.

Outcome: Diversify market with a market scan and an export vision strategy. The project will allow them to double their annual soybean volume and generate new sales. The project will also create 3 new jobs.

Project cost: $ 16,850 / EODP $ 8,425

Project #2

Funding summary: Assisted in the purchase of flour milling equipment in order to continue to supply flour and grains to Mountain Path Organic and Natural Foods. The milling operations will be installed at their new facility in Morrisburg. Homestead Organics is a certified organic grain processor and distributor, feed mill, and supplier of organic farm inputs including seed, feed, grains, livestock supplements, soil amendments, pest controls. The company operates out of Berwick and handles 7500 ton a year.

Outcome: Business expansions, create new business opportunities, and generate new sales. The project will also create 1 new job.

Project cost: $ 101,950 / EODP $ 18,390


Menchies Cornwall

Menchies CornwallFunding Summary: Assisted in the store opening of Menchies in Cornwall. The project includes salaries costs, material and supplies, and communication and promotion costs. The project also includes the purchase of new equipment and information technology for the store. The store opening is planned for January 2015. Menchies is a frozen yogurt franchise initially created by a couple from the U.S. in 2007. Today, they have more than 300 locations around the world.

Outcome: Create a diverse business in the community. Become a “go to” place for the residents and visitors. The project will also create 8 new jobs.

Moose Creek Tire Recycling Inc.

Moose Creek Tire Recycling Inc.Funding summary: Assisted in the installation of a sprinkler system in their outside storage buildings in order to meet the 2007 Ontario Fire Code. The business collects used tires and creates rubber mats. On average, they produce 295 000 mats per year. The business currently has 43 full time employees and is the only business of its kind in Stormont, Dundas & Glengarry.

Outcome: Create a safe work environment. The project will allow the business to continue with other expansion projects and will maintain 43 jobs.

Ontario Pride Eggs

Ontario Pride EggsFunding summary: Assisted in the installation of a booster water pumping system and holding tanks. The project will allow the business use their main well more efficiently and avoid high water costs. Ontario Pride Eggs is an egg grading station operating out of Monkland that provide services to a variety of farmers. They ensure the movement of over 285,000 dozen eggs every week between Gatineau and the GTA. The project will allow the business to continue with other plans for future expansion.

Outcomes: Reduce monthly water costs. More forward with other expansion projects. This project will maintain 43 jobs in Monkland.

Presentex Canada Inc.

Presentex Canada Inc.Funding summary: Assisted in the renovation of an existing structure to allow the organization to operate from their new location in Long Sault. We also assisted in the upgrade of their website. Presentex Canada Inc. serves companies who participate as exhibitors in tradeshows throughout Canada and the United States. They have recently moved their facility from Montreal to Long Sault.

Outcomes: Enhance productivity and allow growth of current domestic markets and attract new exports. This project will create 4 new jobs.

Seaway Yarns Ltd.

Seaway Yarns Ltd.Funding summary: Assisted in the installation of a dye house in the Cornwall plant by contributing to the purchase of new equipment. Seaway Yarns Ltd. is a family owned business that operates out of Cornwall. The organization offers a wide range of high tenacity filament yarns, aramid yarns, spun yarns in various fibres and fibre combinations. The yarns are sold and used to create products such as fire hoses, protective clothing, ropes, etc.

Outcomes: Increase profitability by doing the dyeing themselves. This will allow the organization to expand customer base and introduce new products. This project will also create 3 new jobs.

Project cost: $ 730,000 / EODP $ 82,518


Smart Greens

Smart GreensFunding summary: Assisted in the hiring of a consultant firm to develop a farm management software. The software will allow the business to maximize efficiency of the unit. Smart Greens is a hydroponic farm housed in a refurbished marine container. The unit consists of 256 vertical growing towers capable of growing 3000 plants of varying leafy greens. The business was established in Cornwall in March 2014.

Outcome: Increase efficiency in daily operations and increase quality control. This project will allow them to expand their business and purchase additional farms (containers).

Project cost: $ 15,000 / EODP $ 7,500


St. Lawrence River Institute of Environmental Science

river-instituteFunding summary: Assisted in the expansion of the Applied Research and Technical Services branch by contributing to the hire and training of new staff as well as the purchase of new equipment. St. Lawrence River Institute of Environmental Science is a non-government, non-profit organization, located in Cornwall, with a mandate for environmental research, education, and community action on the St. Lawrence River.

Outcomes: Allow market diversification and increase range of services offered. The project will also increase revenue and create 1 new job.

Tri-County Protein Corp.

Tri-County Protein Corp.Funding summary: Assisted in their plant expansion by contributing to the purchase of new equipment. Tri-County Protein Corp. is a soybean crushing plant that operates out of Winchester. They produce a premium soy meal that is a highly digestible 100% organic product for dairy, poultry and hogs. Currently, the business has an international customer base, selling organic soybean product in both Canada and abroad.

Outcomes: Increase production and minimize energy use/cost. This project will create 1 new job.

United Counties of Stormont, Dundas & Glengarry

United Counties of Stormont, Dundas & Glengarry  - SDGFunding summary: Assisted in the showcase for the 2015 International Plowing Match and Rural Expo in Finch, ON. The costs include hiring a project manager as well as tent rental cost and marketing cost. The United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry (SDG) has existed since 1850 and serves its six local municipalities and over 65,000 residents.

Outcome: Increase visibility for the region. The project will also promote local businesses and attractions.

Winchelsea Events Inc.Funding summary: Assisted in a facility renovation project. The project also includes the purchase of new smallware for the dining facility. This renovation will coincide with the hiring of 6 new staff members as well as staff training on new software. Winchelsea Events is a local catering company serving both business and private clients in Winchester and the surrounding area. Established in 2001, the business has a catering venue and specializes in full-service catering and event planning.

Outcomes: Enhance productivity with new information and communications technologies. Increase overall guest capacity. The project will create 6 new jobs.
