2016 Rural Business Summit

Funding summary: Funding to assist with the organisation of the 2016 Rural Business Summit.  The objective of the summit is to connect partnership-ready businesses and facilitate collaborations (B2B) with private investors and public funders.

Outcome: Developing the theme of rural economy, the summit will bring together expert speakers and business professionals to share their experiences and discuss possible opportunities.   The Summit will also act as an expose for economic development organisations and local entrepreneurs.

Project cost: $ 91,000 /   EODP $ 15,000


2015 International Plowing Match and Rural Expo

2015 International Plowing Match and Rural Expo

Funding summary: Assisted in the marketing campaign for the 2015 International Plowing Match and Rural Expo in Finch, ON. The costs include ads in local newspapers and magazines as well as radio, television and social media. The Ontario Plowing Association developed its first Plowing Match in 1911 for farmers to participate in competitive plowing. International Plowing Match and Rural Expo is the largest show of its kind in North America.

Outcome: Increase attendance to the event and creation of a Local Legacy Fund. The project will also promote Cornwall at the Counties area and its local businesses.

Beyond 21

Beyond-21

Funding summary: Assisted in the development of a strategic plan and marketing tool which will allow Beyond 21 to transition from a program based organisation to a support system for all individuals 21 and older with a developmental disability. The costs related to the project include consultant fees for a Strategic Plan development, a Program development and a Brand Strategy development. Beyond 21 is a support program for developmental disabilities 21 years of age and older. Beyond 21 offers a structured program on a daily basis, Monday to Friday, where young adults can continue to build on their skills. This project will allow the organisation to grow and better serve individuals with developmental disabilities, their families, and the community.

Outcome: Expansion of their services and programs. The project will allow the organization to increase funding and increase staff long term. This project will also create 3 new jobs and maintain 3 jobs.

Project cost: $ 81,681 / EODP $ 19,303


Bourgon Construction

Funding summary: Assisted in the business expansion project which includes creating three new positions: Construction Project Manager, a new Senior Mentoring Carpenter, and a new Entry-Level Apprentice position. The costs associated to the project include salary for new staff. This will allow the business to expand their geographical reach and create a more trained and qualified team. Bourgon Construction, located in Cornwall, has been a leader in local construction since the late 1950s. Their clientele is located across Eastern Ontario and they specialize in institutional, commercial, multi-residential, and industrial projects.

Outcome: Increase staff and expand their geographical reach. The project will allow the business to create a more qualified team and increase sales. The project will create 3 new jobs.

Cardinal Law

Cardinal Law

Funding summary: Assisted in the creation of a new litigation department. The project costs include salary for new hire and material and supplies. Cardinal Law, located in downtown Cornwall, is a boutique law firm practicing in the area of Real Estate, Corporate, Tax and Estate Law, as well as General Litigation. They are a small local business who provides services to other small local businesses.

Outcome: Business expansion. The project will allow them to provide additional services to their clients. This project will also create 3 new jobs.

Champion Mushrooms

Champion Mushrooms

Funding summary: Assisted in the purchase of a new spawning machine to automate the sowing process. The project will allow the business to enhance productivity, reduce cost and increase the quality of mushroom yield. Champion Mushrooms, located in Moose Creek, was created in 2007 and since then has become the largest and highest quality specialty mushroom farm in Eastern Ontario and Quebec. Their main product is oyster (Pleurotus) mushrooms.

Outcome: Increase profitability and decrease cost. The project will allow to double production and ensure employee retention. The project will create 1 new job.

Project cost: $ 91,765 /   EODP $ 12,000


Community Living Glengarry (White Swan Linen)

Glengarry Community Living - White Swan Linen

Funding summary: Assisted in the upgrade of their folding station with the purchase of new equipment. The project costs also include training cost for employees. White Swan Linen, located in Alexandria, is a commercial services (social enterprise) operated by Community Living Glengarry Inc. which provides meaningful work experience for participants with intellectual disabilities. They provide services to airlines, spas, ambulances as well as retirement homes.

Outcome: Productivity enhancement and increase in quality control. The project will allow the organization to be more competitive. This project will also create 2 new jobs.

Eastern Ontario Training Board

Eastern Ontario Training Board

Funding summary: Assisted in the hiring of a labour market coordinator to gather and analyze data. The cost related to the project include salary, website design fees, office supplies, travel cost as well as communication and promotion cost. The Eastern Ontario Training Board is one of the 25 local boards across Ontario, who promotes workforce development in the region. Their mission is to be the champion for local labour force development in the counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry and Prescott-Russell by identifying needs and facilitating solutions.

Outcome: Increase workforce development and fill a continuous demand for labour market data. This project will allow the organizations to increase their services and also create 1 new job.

Project cost: $ 156,264 /   EODP $ 28,559


Kenda Bathware

Funding summary: Assisted with the cost related to a new business start-up. The cost related to the project include: salaries, marketing and equipment. Kenda Bathware Inc is a new start-up company that will both manufacture and supply bathroom product. The manufacturing arm will specialize in the production of acrylic bathtubs and showers for new construction and also renovation. The supplier arm of the business will offer sinks, vanities, toilets, shower doors and also gelcoat fiberglass showers to complete. The business will be located in the Industrial Park in Long Sault.

Outcome: Create a new manufacturing plant. Become a leader in acrylic manufacturing. The project will create 6 new jobs.

Project cost: $ 386,360 / EODP $ 32,652


Quality Manufacturing

Funding summary: Assisted in the business expansion project which includes hiring a VP of Sales and Marketing to spearhead efforts to expand the company’s footprint in the Canadian marketplace and penetrate the US marketplace. This will allow the business to grow and expand their services. The costs associated to the project include salary for new staff. Quality Manufacturing, founded in 2000 and newly located to Ingleside, is an injection molding company. Their mission is to excel at providing innovative and integrated solutions. The project will allow the business to diversify their markets and increase staff long term.

Outcomes: Market diversification and increase sales. The project will allow the business to be more competitive. This project will also create 6 new jobs and maintain over 19 existing jobs.

Project cost: $ 124,990 / EODP $ 37,670


St. Lawrence River Institute of Environmental Science

Funding summary: Assisted in the expansion of the Applied Research and Technical Services branch by contributing to the hire and training of new staff as well as the purchase of new equipment. St. Lawrence River Institute of Environmental Science is a non-government, non-profit organization, located in Cornwall, with a mandate for environmental research, education, and community action on the St. Lawrence River.

Outcomes: Allow market diversification and increase range of services offered. The project will also increase revenue and create 1 new job.

Tri-County Protein Corp.

Tri-County Protein Corp.

Funding summary: Assisted in plant expansion by contributing to the purchase of new equipment. Tri-County Protein Corp. is a soybean crushing plant that operates out of Winchester. They produce a premium soy meal that is a highly digestible 100% organic product for dairy, poultry and hogs. Currently, the business has an international customer base, selling organic soybean product in both Canada and abroad.

Outcomes: Increase production and minimize energy use/cost. This project will create 1 new job.

Twin Peak Sanitation Services

Funding summary: Assisted in the business expansion project which includes hiring a new employee to run their Hydro-vac Truck. This will allow the business to increase their services and increase staff long term. Twin Peak Sanitation provides septic tank servicing to rural residents in SDG. They also provide portable toilet and wash station rentals for special events, construction sites, etc. Established in 1996, by Jim Mills, the business is located in Williamsburg, South Dundas. The project will allow the business to train a qualified team of employees and diversify their market.

Outcomes: The project will allow the business to diversify their market and create 1 new seasonal employee.

United Counties of Stormont, Dundas & Glengarry

United Counties of Stormont, Dundas & Glengarry  - SDG

Funding summary: Assisted in the showcase for the 2015 International Plowing Match and Rural Expo n Finch, ON. The costs include hiring a project manager as well as tent rental cost and marketing cost. The United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry (SDG) has existed since 1850 and serves its six local municipalities and over 65,000 residents.

Outcome: Increase visibility for the region. The project will also promote local businesses and attractions.

Xenopus Inc.

Xenopus Inc. - TriHawk

Funding summary: Assisted in the business expansion project to increase manufacturing floor space and purchase new equipment. The project will coincide with a Lean Manufacturing Assessment. Xenopus Inc., located in Morrisburg, manufactures and sells Tri Hawk dental burs which are used to cut tooth structure and hard metals to prepare teeth for restoration. The expansion will allow the business to improve employee work environment and ensure employee retention with new skills training. This will also allow the business to improve their work flow, cut down on waste time and enhance productivity.

Outcome: Double manufacturing space and increase production. Improve efficiency, training and quality control. The project will create 3 new jobs and maintain over 10 jobs.
